Who is Mamphela Ramphele?

Mamphela Aletta Ramphele is a South African politician, a former activist against apartheid, a medical doctor, an academic and businesswoman. She was one of several lovers linked to Steve Biko, with whom she had two children; Biko was already married. She is a former Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town and a one-time Managing Director at the World Bank. In February 2013, she announced the formation of a new political party, named Agang South Africa, intended to challenge the African National Congress. Following the 2014 South African general election, Aganag SA won 2 seats in the National Assembly of South Africa, paving the way for Dr. Ramphele to become a Member of Parliament.
