Who is Mayfield Workman?
Mayfield “Bull” Workman is a former American football coach. He served as head coach at Arlington High School from 1951–1963, guiding the school to its only state title to date, in 1951. Following his coaching career, he became athletic director of the Arlington Independent School District — a post he held for 17 years before retiring in 1980. In that role he hired some of the most successful coaches in the district, including Lamar's Eddy Peach. In his last three years at Arlington High, he coached his son, Russell Workman, who was an All-State running back in his senior year and later played for the University of Texas Longhorns.
Workman is the namesake of Mayfield Workman Junior High School in Arlington. In 1996, the Mayfield Workman Award was created, handed out annually to the best high school football player in the area.
