Who was Moss Kent?

Moss Kent was a United States Representative from New York. Born in Rensselaer County, he completed preparatory studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced. He removed to Cooperstown, New York. He was a member of the New York State Senate from 1799 to 1803 and served in the New York State Assembly in 1807 and 1810. He was appointed judge of Jefferson County on February 26, 1810, and was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses as the representative for the newly created New York's 18th congressional district. He pursued the daughter of friend and political rival William Cooper, Hannah Cooper. Kent never married due to her premature death at the age of 23. He resumed the practice of law and in 1838 died in Plattsburgh; interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

His brother was James Kent, an American jurist and legal scholar.
