Who was Murdoch Mackenzie?

Murdoch Mackenzie, FRS was a hydrographer and cartographer of Scottish descent. He is known for his methods of surveying the Orkney Islands, the subsequent maps are known as the Mackenzie Charts are still referred to as the best guides for that area and are still in use. He is also credited with the invention of the station pointer, a navigational tool that preceded the marine sexton and chronometer.
