Who is Mustapa Mohamed?

Dato Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed is a Malaysian politician. He is the Minister for International Trade and Industry in the Barisan Nasional coalition government and is the Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the seat of Jeli in Kelantan, representing the United Malay National Organisation.

Mustapa has held a number of government positions, including Deputy Finance Minister, Minister for Entrepreneur Development, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Minister for Higher Education, and Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industry. He was appointed to the Trade portfolio when Najib Tun Razak became Prime Minister in April 2009.

Mustapa was elected to Parliament in the 1995 election, but was defeated for re-election in 1999. He won back the seat in the 2004 election. In 2004 he was also elected to the Kelantan State Assembly. He had been slated to become Chief Minister of Kelantan but UMNO failed to win a majority in the Assembly.

Mustapa is an economist. He graduated from the University of Melbourne, Australia with a First Class Honours degree in Economics and from the Boston University with a Masters in Economic Development.
