In 2004 lost his seat in Parliament when he switched to run for the Besut seat in Terengganu but in 2008 was elected to the federal seat of Bachok, defeating the incumbent Awang Adek Hussin of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

Nasharudin served as the Deputy President of PAS from 2005 to 2011. He won re-election to the position in a contested battle in 2009, which was claimed by observers to be a win for PAS' conservatives.
