Who was Nathan F. Dixon III?
Nathan Fellows Dixon, III was a United States Representative and Senator from Rhode Island. Born in Westerly, he attended the common schools of Westerly and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He graduated from Brown University in 1869 and from Albany Law School in 1871; he was admitted to the bar that year and commenced practice in Westerly. From 1877 to 1885 he was United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island.
Dixon was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jonathan Chace and served from February 12 to March 4, 1885; he was not a candidate for renomination. Dixon was a member of the Rhode Island Senate from 1885 to 1889, and was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jonathan Chace and served from April 10, 1889, to March 4, 1895; he was not a candidate for reelection. While in Congress he was chairman of the Committee on Patents. He resumed the practice of law and engaged in banking, and died in Westerly in 1897; interment was in River Bend Cemetery.
Nathan Fellows Dixon, III was the son of Nathan Fellows Dixon and a grandson of Nathan Fellows Dixon, a U.S. Senator and Representative, respectively, from Rhode Island.
