Who was Peter Sturholdt?

Peter Joseph Sturholdt was an American boxer who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics.

He was born in Stillwater, Minnesota and died in St. Louis, Missouri. He fell to his death when the scaffolding he was on broke while painting. He left behind his wife, Margaret M. Terney and 5 children.

In 1900 Peter Joseph Sturholdt was 14yrs old. lived at 1221 N 15th St., St. Louis, MO with Step-father Samuel Scott, mother Dena, sister Annie M, sister Hatti L. He had no formal education could read, write and speak English. His father, John Surholdt believed born in 1859 in Hanover, Germany died at 31yrs old in 1890. His mother, Cathrine Sophia Bruhn was born 1859 in Schlweg Holstein, Denmark and the 1900 census puts their arrival into the USA in 1887 with one child Annie M. born in 1882. Cathrine was a dressmaker did not read or write but did speak English, no formal education.

In 1904, he finished fourth in the lightweight class after losing the bronze medal fight to Russell van Horn. In November 1905 the AAU disqualified the second placed Jack Egan from all AAU competitions and he had to return all his prizes. Therefore Sturholdt moved up to bronze.
