Pierre Biard was a Jesuit missionary who was given orders by Father Pierre Coton SJ, Jesuit provincial in Paris, along with Father Enemond Masse,sj,confessor to the Regente, Maria de Medicis, widow of Henri IV, mother of young Louis XIII, to take charge of a mission at Port-Royal in Acadia, or Mi'kma'ki, to use the indigenous name.
