Who was Pope Paschal II?
Pope Paschal II, born Ranierius, was the head of the Catholic Church from 13 August 1099 to his death in 1118. A monk of the Cluniac order, he was created cardinal priest of the Titulus S. Clementi by Pope Gregory VII about 1076, and was consecrated pope in succession to Pope Urban II on 19 August 1099. His reign of almost twenty years was exceptionally long for a Pope of the Middle Ages.
