Jacob Hoffman was born in Pápa, Hungary, in 1881. Hoffman studied in traditional Hungarian yeshivot and was ordained by, among others, Rabbi Simcha Bunem Sofer, who headed the yeshivah in Pressburg founded by the Chatam Sofer.
