Who was Rais Amrohvi?
Syed Muhammad Mehdi, known as Rais Amrohvi was an acclaimed scholar, Urdu poet and psychoanalyst from Pakistan.
He was born on 12 September 1914 in Amroha, India, in a notable family of scholars. Other members of his family were poets. He migrated to Pakistan on 19 October 1947 and settled in Karachi.
He was known for his unique style of Qatanigari. For decades he penned quatrains for Pakistan's daily newspaper, Jang. He also supported the Urdu language and the Urdu-speaking people of Pakistan.
He established an institution called Raees Academy which trained people for the improvement of their emotional and moral well-being.
He penned a number of books on metaphysics, meditation, and yoga. He also tried to produce a standard Urdu translation of the Bhagavad Gita. He was assassinated on 22 September 1988, reportedly by a religious fanatic. The degree of Doctorate Titled Rais Amrohvi,Hayat Aur Adabi Khidmaat " has already been awarded by M.J.P Rohilkhand University to Dr. Saeed Ul Hasan Amroha,U.P. India in the year 2006
