Who is Ambrose Reeves?

The Rt Rev Ambrose Reeves was an eminent Anglican Priest and opponent of Apartheid in the 20th century.

He was born on 6 December 1899, educated at Great Yarmouth Grammar School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and ordained, after a period of study at the College of the Resurrection at Mirfield, in 1927. After a curacy at St Albans, Golders Green he held incumbencies at St Margaret, Leven, St James Haydock and St Nicholas, Liverpool. In 1949 he was elevated to the Episcopate as the 3rd Bishop of Johannesburg a post he held until 1961 when he was deported. He then continued to serve the church as an Assistant Bishop, firstly in the Diocese of London and then Chichester. A Sub-Prelate of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, he died on 23 December 1980
