Who was Robert Dulhunty?

Robert Venour Dulhunty is chiefly remembered as being the first permanent white settler of what has since become the City of Dubbo, in the rural heartland of the Australian state of New South Wales. The well read son of a medical practitioner, Dr John Dulhunty, and the doctor's wife, Jane Dulhunty, he also was one of the wealthiest and most enterprising citizens of the then Colony of New South Wales during the late-Georgian and early-Victorian eras.

It was in about 1832 that Dulhunty took up the land — which he named 'Dubbo' — on the Macquarie River, just to the south of the present-day city. Consequently, he can be viewed as the founder of what is today one of the most important regional centres in eastern Australia.
