Who was Sándor Ziffer?
Sándor Ziffer was a Hungarian painter characterized by his strong decorative paintings and use of definite contours and colour in his works.
Ziffer studied at the School of Design, and he was later a pupil of Raupp at the Munich Academy and at Simon Hollósy's school of art in 1904.
After 1906 he worked in Nagybánya where he settled on a permanent basis in 1918 making several trips to Paris and Berlin where encountered forms of expressionism which impacted upon his painting. Later from 1935 to 1945 he worked as an art teacher. He played an important role in establishing modern Romanian painting. His first pictures reflected the influence of Simon Hollósy, later he became a follower of post-impressionism. Now 6 of his paintings are in the property of the Hungarian National Gallery.
