Who is Sergio Vela?

Sergio Vela Martínez is a Mexican opera director, designer, radio and television host, musician, lawyer and academician. He was the President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts during beginning of the presidency of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa and resigned in 2009.

He was director of the Bellas Artes Opera; from 1992 to 2000, he was Director General of the Festival Internacional Cervantino, Coordinator of the 2000 Cultural Program: From the 20th Century to the Third Millennium and is Artistic Advisor to the Mining Palace Academy of Music and Artistic Director of the Morelia Music Festival. From 2001 to 2006, he was Director General of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and he was President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts from December 2006 to March 2009.

He has given several courses and conferences on opera and music at various academic institutions, such as the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Universidad Panamericana, the Iberoamerican University, the Mozart Philharmonic Association and Casa Lamm.
