Who is Tirone E. David?
Tirone Esperidiao David, OC, OOnt, FRCS is a Canadian cardiac surgeon and professor of surgery at University of Toronto. He is an attending cardiac surgeon at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospistal. Dr. David is known for his remarkable surgical skills and creativity and has developed numerous operative procedures to treat patients with heart valve disease and aortic aneurysms.Dr. David is known for his remarkable surgical skills in complex operations for both technique and speed and has been involved in developing superior techniques in cardiac valve repair instead of replacement. As of 2006 Dr. David is second only to Dr. Magdi Yacoub for extra complex heart surgeries. In 2007, Dr. David performed a mitral valve repair showing the technique using an annular ring in a live podcast on the internet. He developed an operation to preserve the aortic valve in patients with aortic root aneurysms such as in Marfan syndrome which is commonly referred to as "David Operation". He travels extensively to other countries to speak and demonstrate surgical techniques. He has published extensively in peer reviewed journals, is the author of many chapters in surgical textbooks, and is the editor or co-editor of 5 surgical textbooks. He was an officer of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery for many years and became president in 2005.
