Who is Toshiyuki Shimada?

Toshiyuki Shimada is a Japanese American orchestral conductor. He is Music Director of both the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra in New London, CT, and the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes in Corning, NY. He has been Music Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra of Yale University since 2005, and has been Principal Conducting of the Vienna Modern Masters, in Vienna, Austria, since 1998. He is also Music Director Laureate of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, in Portland, Maine, which he was Music Director from 1986 to 2006. Prior to Portland, he was Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra for six years, beginning in 1981. He also serves as Principal Conductor of the Vienna Modern Masters, in Austria since 1998.

Shimada has been a frequent guest conductor of the European orchestras such as the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra, the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Slovak Philharmonic, NÖ Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna, L'Orchestre national de Lille, in France, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Edinburgh Festival. He has conducted in Mexico, with la Orquesta Filhamonico de Jalisco in Guadalajara.
