Who is Walter C. Young?
Walter C. "Walt" Young is an American educator and politician.
Young was born in New York City. He was a founding member of Pembroke Pines, Florida and the state representative for Broward County for 20 years.
He earned a B.S. degree from Niagara University, 1949; an M.S. degree from Barry College, 1957; an Ed.D degree from the University of Miami, 1965; and received Barry college's first Honorary Doctor of Law Degree in 1982.
Elected to the Pembroke Pines City Council in 1962 and he would also serve on the Broward Community College board of Trustees, 1971-1976. He was elected to the state House in 1972 and quickly made his mark on the state’s education industry. He was known in the 1980s as Florida's "Mr. Education."
Due to his efforts for the city of Pembroke Pines, the community named its middle school after him; Walter C. Young Middle School and Resource Center opened its doors in early 1991.
