Who is Xavier-Luc Duval?

Charles Gaëtan Xavier Luc Duval, GCSK, FCA, MP is the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economic Development of Mauritius. Previously he was Minister of Tourism from 2005 to 2010. Being the leader of the Mauritian Social Democrat Party, he serves as member of parliament for constituency No 18, Belle Rose and Quatre Bornes since 2005.

An accountant by profession, Duval is the leader of the PMSD political party which was in coalition with other parties like Ptr and MMSM which won the elections in 2005 and he was appointed as Vice Prime Minister by the President on 5 July 2005.

Duval was firstly elected as member of parliament in 1987 under the MSM banner which he later resigned from to officially join the PMSD. He was briefly a cabinet minister from 1993 to 1995 in the government of Sir Anerood Jugnauth before joining hands with the Mauritius Labour Party in 2000.

Due to the alliance between the MSM and the Mauritius Labour Party in 2010, Xavier Luc Duval was still appointed as Vice Prime Minister but was offered the Ministry of Social Integration as his party was a minority party with only 4 seats in the government. Consequently, when the MSM left the government in 2011, he was promoted and appointed Minister of Finance after the resignation of Pravind Jugnauth.
