Yusuf Malek was a notable Assyrian who was credited with saving his kinsmen from subjugation by the British and newly formed Iraqi government after the Ottoman Empire massacre of more than 300,000 Assyrians during World War 1 in the Assyrian Genocide. He was also known as "Tel Kef's son," and he had saved many communities including the village where his parents were from through vocal action and the petitioning of the British government.
