He was born in Winterthur and was one of 6 children. His mother was Swiss and his father, a British engineer, was the founder of SLM - Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik. He attended the Engineering School of Winterthur. He worked at his father's factory and then became the director.
