Who was Jean Bastien-Thiry?

Jean-Marie Bastien-Thiry was a French Air Force lieutenant-colonel, military air weaponry engineer, who attempted to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle on 22 August 1962, following Algerian independence. Sentenced to death, he remains the last person to be executed by firing squad in France. His life and the events of 22 August are recounted in the true crime book "The Martyr."
