John Jonas

Who is John Jonas?

John Joseph Jonas, OC CQ FRSC is a Canadian metallurgist who specializes in metal shaping and forming.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Jonas received a Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering in 1954 from McGill University and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Sciences in 1960 from Gonville & Caius College in University of Cambridge. He was a Professor in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering at McGill University. As of 2006 he holds the Francqui International Chair at the Ghent University.

In 1993, his award as an Officer of the Order of Canada said he was "internationally renowned for having introduced a method of controlled rolling in the manufacture of steel sheeting". In 1995, he was awarded Quebec Government's Prix Marie-Victorin. In 2000, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec, and awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' Killam Prize.

He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Society for Metals, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
